Dude…

Week 4 is wrapped up and it couldn’t have been a better weekend. We had some close games and some not-close games. We had action taking place all over the country. Your guys at Dudes and Sports have you covered on the latest takeaways. How6rd had multiple phenomenal takes and PC has a few. Hey, we're just like you. We grabbed our beers and watched college football. Some of us were busier than others, but we always wanted to give you our week 4 takeaways!!!

How6rd’s Takeaways

The best state for college football… Washington: If there’s one sure thing we can take away from any college football around the country this weekend it’s that both the UW Huskies and Wazzu Cougars are two very strong teams that have started this season on fire. Michael Penix Jr. and his receiving core, Romeo Odunze being the main workhorse, have lit up every defense they’ve faced this year and have looked stellar in doing so. Over in Pullman, Washington, the Cougars are getting a way more developed Cam Ward at QB than many people around the country (including myself) thought he could possibly be after last year. We also can’t forget to talk about edge rusher Ron Stone who has been dominant up front on defense this season, and combining his performance last weekend with the lockdown secondary for the Cougars both sides of the ball are very lethal for the rest of their schedule ahead. There’s a lot of season left and anything can happen in the PAC 12 this season, but if both teams continue to at least look somewhat this explosive and strong the rest of this season we could be getting one of the most anticipated Apple Cup matchups in a long time at the end of this year.

Florida State getting saved by the bell (or bye week rather): There’s a lot to like and not like from not only Florida State’s performance but the matchup as a whole they had with Clemson. What was completely clear this past Saturday is that Cade Klubnik is very raw and his composure was absent on the Tigers’ single Overtime drive. He’s a good QB for Power Five standards but a lot of work to do if he wants to be up with Clemson’s elite QB history. Now Florida State’s defense was clearly what carried them to the win in this one really becoming an anchor in the second half. The offense had a really rough outing trying to get any run game going once again as Jordan Travis didn’t look like himself when taking the ball himself and the running backs couldn’t find almost any running room. The offensive unit as a whole is banged up and even though the Clemson defensive line is still solid as usual they got past the run block way too easy this game. Florida State luckily doesn’t play football again until October 7th due to an early bye week, so they need each one of those days between games to get some players rested and back on the field in better condition because it’s a long eight straight games after that.

More trouble for Colorado than praise for Oregon: Alright time to rip the band-aid off and talk about what went down in Eugene, Oregon this weekend which was…a wake-up call to Coach Prime and the rest of his team. Oregon didn’t do too much different from what they’ve been doing the rest of the season and it’s clear that they’re a well-rounded team to stay competitive in the stacked conference out west, but they exposed the weaknesses of Colorado very well and the Dan Lanning era will be one of the Ducks’ most successful years in school history. As for Colorado it just came down to the fact that they had the smaller men on both the offensive and defensive lines. Shedeur Sanders was running for his life it seemed like every time the Buffs snapped the ball and the Ducks ended up with seven sacks total to end the game even though it seemed to be higher. On the other side outside of a couple of drives, Bo Nix looked to be finding his receivers with nearly no pressure in the pocket and Oregon’s offensive line was overpowering their matchups no problem. We can even go into detail about Colorado’s penalty yardage being less than a 100-yard difference from their total offensive yards, but the moral of the story from this game is that Colorado and Dein Sanders are destined for great days ahead yet there’s work to be done in recruiting for some bigger bodies on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Notre Dame stayed strong 90% of the game…but the last 10% was awful: Both teams in my opinion have similar positive and negative takeaways from this game with strong defensive performances but rough QB play and questionable coaching decisions. Meanwhile, Notre Dame fumbled the bag when it mattered most on their last offensive drive and when Kyle McCord’s name was called on for the Buckeyes he had the best drive all game. Ohio State’s gunslinger still looked very timid and missed on a few big throws in the game, but he didn’t have a huge mistake that seemed to kill the team at any point and that made them stick with the punches that the Irish were giving him. Now talking about the last two plays of the game, it is correct that Ohio State ran the ball in on the final play of the game creating a classic walk off moment in South Bend, but we also got to bring up that Ohio State had one more player than Notre Dame had on the field in the biggest part of the game which were 10 men. If Marcus Freeman is going to make this team a true threat going forward to anyone on their schedule no matter the opponent, they have to clean up the weekly mental errors and offensive play calling specifically in crunch time of the game.

PC’S Takeaways

Kansas is actually good once again: The Rock Chalk Jayhawks aren’t just a basketball school. The Kansas Jayhawks start this season off with a 4-0 record. KU beat BYU 38-27. If you watch KU football you know the offense is good. Led by Jalon Daniels and Devin Neal could put up points. However, it was KU’s defense that shined. Kobee Bryant started it off with a bang. He sent the BYU running back flying as the ball popped loose. Bryant quickly picked it up and scored. The Hawks found themselves down at halftime, but Leipold dialed up option plays for Daniels to be able to use his best weapon. His mobility. Kansas came back and ate up the field with their rushing attack. The Jayhawks are known as a basketball team, but their football team is showing up. They have a really tough test this weekend against the Longhorns in a matchup you can almost guarantee I will be watching.

The basketball schools are on top of the football kingdom: When you see colleges such as Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas you immediately see them as a basketball school. Known as the Blue Bloods in college hoops, these three teams are a combined 12-0 at the start of the season. Duke has a win over a ranked Clemson team. This was at the beginning of the season when everyone thought the Tigers were National Championship contenders once again. They are now 2-2 on the season. North Carolina hasn’t been tested all that much. However, Drake Maye looks phenomenal at Quarterback and is in the early conversations for the Heisman watch. As explained earlier, Kansas got a big win against BYU this week. All three of these teams were supposed to stick to dribbling, but don’t be too surprised to see these three teams at least make a bowl.
