Dude…
The football season has become one of the most exciting things in many sports fans' liveduring the fall. Long work days, annoying co-workers, life being miserable. All we can rely on is some dude throwing a pig skin around a field. Yes, football is back and is now heading towards the first ever college football playoff. Who gets in the 12 team playoff? Who collapses under the pressure? The Dudes have their takeaways from week 2. Which was definitely a week some fans will want to forget.
Rock Chalk? More like Run the Damn Ball- As a well known Kansas fan, you know I had to start with this one. The Jayhawks were ranked 19th in the land and went to play against Illinois. A notable Big 10 school, but a squad the Hawks should have beaten. However, the offensive coordinator, also known as Jeff Grimes, likes to throw the football. Especially deep and relies on JD’s ability to throw the deep ball. News flash, he doesn't do that well. As if our running back isn’t averaging 7.2 rushing yards a carry. Our dynamic backfield was not trusted. Instead of having JD use his mobility and throw crossing routes to his speed wide receivers, Grimes ran post/wheel every play. Guess what? IT DIDN’T WORK!! The best part of the Illinois defense is their secondary. Guess what? THEY CONTINUED TO THROW TO THAT WAY AFTER 2 INTERCEPTIONS BY THE SAME GUY!!! I mean come on, I don’t expect much, but I expect a better performance than that. Is it all Grimes' fault, no way. JD couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean last game. However, terrible QB play and terrible play calling, then repeating that process is destined to fail. The loss isn’t the worst thing in the world. The Jayhawks can still win the Big 12 and get the auto bid. However, Grimes and JD need to get back in the lab and get this figured out, or UNLV will come into Children’s Mercy Park and punch KU in the mouth.
Colo-Shitty? Yikes!!! Man, the Buffaloes looked like a dog with it’s tail between it’s legs against Big Red Nebraska. They got smoked. It wasn’t just the defense this time either. Shadeur couldn’t get the offense going. Maybe it had to do with the lineman playing in the sand as the defenders ran right through them, causing Sanders to run for his life. They allowed Sanders to get sacked 6 times. 6 is crazy. Especially in just one game, but that’s just the start of this team's problems. The lack of defensive integrity is insane. I haven’t seen a program with such high talent get dismantled 2 weeks in a row like I have with Colorado. I mean they keep getting COOKED. Not to mention the Buffaloes starting QB going back into the locker room before the game was even over…. SOME LEADER BRO!!! Like come on, no one feels sorry for you. Oh you don’t have a good offensive line, get over it. It’s not like they haven’t recruited. Sure, it’s frustrating, but you don’t leave your team in the middle of the game. That’s just being a bad leader bro. Hey, I don’t know anything, but if that was my QB, I would already be looking to head into the portal. It’s not like Deion is going to stick around after his kids are gone. The Buffaloes need to figure it out, or the Sanders experiment will be talked about as a failure for the rest of time.
Horns down no more?- Everyone knew the Texas Longhorns were going to be good this year. I just don’t think people expected them to be this good. The Longhorns went into The Big House and thumped the Wolverines of Michigan. Not only did Ewers look really good, the defense for the Longhorns looked even better. Sure, there were a lot of question marks coming into this game about the Wolverines. Coming off a National Championship with their star QB and RB leaving for the NFL is going to start a gap. Who knew it would be this wide though. The Longhorns may be new to the SEC this year, but they are definitely going to be a tough team to beat all season long.
NIU Giant Slayers- You thought the KU loss was bad, you must have forgotten about the NIU upset. The Northern Illinois Huskies were paid 1.2 MILLION to go into Notre Dame and hand them their first loss of the season. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame is a covenant place to play. A legendary venue with a rich history and a ton of winning football. However, winning wasn’t on the agenda. NIU took and early lead in the first half, and held out to be up 10-7 at halftime. When the Irish finally seemed to wake up, the Huskies continued to win the possession battle and kept the ND team on the sidelines. Down 13-14 late in the 4th, kicker Kanon Woodill hit a game winning field goal to put the Huskies up 16-14. The defense held out to gain NIU it’s biggest upset in school history. After going into College Station and beating Texas A&M in week 1, the Irish received a devastating loss to their playoff hopes. Without being in a major conference, it will be hard to overcome this to get into the playoff. NIU took home the win and said “bring me my money” on the way out of town.
