NFL Notes: Wild Card Weekend Reactions

PC

Dude…

Wild Card Weekend has officially come to a close. 4 teams were eliminated and 6 moved on. With the two byes, 8 teams remain for the fight for the Lombardi trophy. The weekend was full of snooze fest matchups and one great football game. Here is my Wild Card Weekend reaction!

Houston Texans defeat the LA Chargers- The Houston Texans delivered a statement victory over the LA Chargers 32-12, fueled by a dominant defensive performance and a standout effort from their ground game. The Texans' defense looked incredible, racking up four sacks and forcing four interceptions from Justin Herbert, who continued his pattern of inconsistency in high-stakes games. Derek Stingley Jr. showcased his playmaking ability with two crucial interceptions, while Eric Murray contributed a highlight-reel pick-six that swung the momentum decisively in Houston's favor. On offense, Joe Mixon proved to be the X-factor, powering through the Chargers' defense for over 100 yards rushing and a touchdown. This well-rounded performance underscored the Texans’ potential as a formidable team when firing on all cylinders. They now head to Arrowhead to face the back-to-back Super Bowl Champions in the Kansas City Chiefs, which is a daunting task.

Baltimore Ravens defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers-  The Baltimore Ravens secured a decisive 28-14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, thanks to an unstoppable performance from Derrick Henry. Henry dominated on the ground, racking up 186 yards and two touchdowns, which left the Steelers' defense reeling. His punishing runs opened up the play-action game for Lamar Jackson, who capitalized by throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns. The Steelers' inability to contain Henry highlighted their defensive struggles and compounded their offensive woes. With Russell Wilson continuing to underperform, Pittsburgh faces a pivotal decision: stick with the veteran quarterback or turn to the younger, more dynamic Justin Fields. Meanwhile, some fans calling for Mike Tomlin's firing are both absurd and unwarranted. Tomlin has never had a losing season, a testament to his coaching brilliance, and the real issue lies in the Steelers' lack of playmakers on offense. Without bolstering their weapons, even a coaching change won’t solve their problems. The Ravens will now head to Buffalo in an MVP vs. MVP matchup in upstate New York.

Buffalo Bills defeat the Denver Broncos- The Buffalo Bills delivered a commanding 31-7 victory over the Denver Broncos, solidifying their status as Super Bowl contenders and bolstering Josh Allen's MVP case. Allen dazzled with 272 passing yards and two touchdowns, orchestrating an offensive masterclass that overwhelmed the Broncos. James Cook added to the dominance with a stellar 120 rushing yards and a touchdown, showcasing the Bills’ balanced attack. For Denver, rookie quarterback Bo Nix struggled with noticeable jitters, putting up an underwhelming performance in the face of Buffalo's relentless defense. Despite the loss, Nix and the Broncos can take pride in a season where they defied expectations to earn a playoff berth. With another talented wide receiver in their arsenal, Denver’s future could be bright, but on this day, the Bills proved to be an insurmountable challenge. The Bills will now host the Baltimore Ravens in a must see match for the playoffs. Whoever wins this, may be the favorite to win Super Bowl 59.

Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Green Bay Packers- The Philadelphia Eagles earned a gritty 22-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers, leaning heavily on their rushing attack and stout defense. Saquon Barkley set the tone with 119 yards on the ground, consistently breaking tackles and keeping the chains moving. Jalen Hurts contributed 131 yards and two touchdowns through the air but seemed to be missing some of his usual rhythm in the passing game. Dallas Goedert delivered one of the highlights of the night with a vicious stiff arm on his way to a touchdown that electrified the crowd. On the other side, Jordan Love struggled mightily, throwing for 212 yards but was picked off three times in a performance that doomed Green Bay's chances. Missing key weapons like Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed, the Packers’ offense lacked the firepower to compete, and their absences proved costly in the long run. The Eagles offense needs to be more consistent if they want to make a deep run, especially with the LA Rams powerful offense.

Washington Commanders defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers- The Washington Commanders edged out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a thrilling game, securing a nail-biting victory with a dramatic 23-20 finish. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels shone brightly, looking anything but inexperienced as he threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns, displaying poise and precision under pressure. Baker Mayfield matched the energy with 185 yards and two touchdowns of his own, keeping the Bucs competitive throughout. The game turned in the third quarter when Bobby Wagner delivered a clutch sack-fumble for the Commanders, setting up a short touchdown pass to Terry "Scary Terry" McLaurin. Tampa Bay responded with a field goal to tie it up late, but Washington marched down the field, and Zane Gonzalez’s doinked game-winning field goal sealed the victory in dramatic fashion. Both teams showcased resilience and promise, leaving fans optimistic about bright futures for these squads.

LA Rams defeat the Minnesota Vikings- The LA Rams dominated the Minnesota Vikings in a commanding 27-9 victory, powered by a relentless defense and steady quarterback play from Matthew Stafford. Stafford showcased his veteran composure, throwing for 207 yards and two touchdowns while posting an impressive QBR of 117. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold struggled mightily in what was arguably the biggest game of his career, throwing for 245 yards and a touchdown but making critical mistakes. A second-quarter interception halted the Vikings' momentum, and a sack-fumble recovered for a Rams touchdown put the game out of reach. The young Rams defense was electric, sacking Darnold nine times and hitting him 12 times, leaving Minnesota's offense in disarray. It was a complete performance by the Rams, who proved too dominant for the Vikings to overcome.
